Don’t Look Up is a 2021 satirical dark sci-fi comedy, co-written and directed by Oscar-winning writer and director Adam McKay. The film starts off when PhD candidate and astronomer Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) discovers a 10-Kilometer-long comet headed straight for earth. She informs her fellow astronomer Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and they jointly discover that the comet will impact earth in six months with species-wiping consequences. Together, with the help of Dr. Teddy Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan), they try to inform the US president Janie Orlean (Meryl Streep) and the world of the oncoming threat which no one takes seriously or even cares about.

The star-studded cast also includes Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi (Kid Cudi), Himesh Patel, Tyler Perry, Michael Chiklis and Timothée Chalamet.

Because of the huge, lavish cast, this Netflix film was highly anticipated and when it was released on the streaming platform on Christmas Eve, it went straight to no.1 on their streaming charts in the UK and has been there for over a week.

In my opinion, Jennifer Lawrence is the highlight of the film. She has been in very little movies in recent years and it has been a delight seeing her back on our screens. Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of Dr. Mindy is wonderful (as are most of his performances). The two as leads in the movie work well and they have a favorable dynamic.

Despite all the hype surrounding the movie, it slightly underperforms to expectations. It’s too dismal to fully enjoy without getting depressed about what the world has come to. There are quite a lot of funny moments and gags throughout but not enough to class it singularly as a comedy, but more of a disaster drama.

This is another reminder that people need to listen to in order to do something about the state of our world, to avoid catastrophe and preserve the planet for future generations to come.

Overall the film shows an interesting and scarily realistic idea that brings a few laughs and a lot of existential dread. Despite this, it’s better than a lot of Netflix movies and up there as one of their best movies of the year.

Score - 7/10
