This Is the End is a 2013 black comedy action-adventure film and is the first film both written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, writers of such popular movies as Superbad, Pineapple Express, Bad Neighbours, and The Interview, which the duo also directed. The film is based on a 2007 short film, Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse, written by the duo and starring Rogen and Jay Baruchel.

The main characters are fictionalised versions of the actors playing them. The film starts with Jay Baruchel visiting his friend and fellow actor Seth Rogen in Los Angeles where they reluctantly go to a house party at James Franco’s newly renovated mansion. When at a shop, Seth and Jay witness the world spiral into chaos, which the mansion's party-goers don't notice or believe. A giant sinkhole opens outside the mansion shortly after leaving many fatalities but the building unscathed. The six survivors inside the mansion are Seth, Jay, Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson and Danny McBride. There are many hijinks and shenanigans to follow as they try to survive life in a biblical apocalypse and life living with each other.

This Is the End features many guest stars, including Michael Cera, Emma Watson, Paul Rudd, Rihanna, Channing Tatum, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Kevin Hart and Jason Segal.

This Is the End was a success upon release, both critically and commercially, making a total gross of approximately $126 million and receiving praise for its eclectic cast and smart and witty script. There were said to be talks of a sequel after the film's release but rumours were ultimately denied in 2014.

Another film based around the apocalypse was also released in 2013, The World's End, the final part of Edgar Wright‘s ‘Cornetto Trilogy’, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The two films are not really similar but both are good laughs.

The movie is fun and hilarious, though sometimes scary and daunting (due to their apocalypse being mainly based on the bible‘s book of revelations). The CGI effects are realistic, which makes the outside scenery chilling to watch. The script shows another great example of Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen’s unique and hilarious style of writing. But the main reason that this movie is so good is the main cast, who have terrific chemistry as they manage to riff off of each other expertly. This Is the End is an action-packed caper full to the brim with laughs and gruesomeness.

Score - 8/10
