The Bronze is a 2015 American sports comedy-drama, starring and co-written by Melissa Rauch (best known as Bernadette in The Big Bang Theory) as Hope Ann Gregory: a foul mouthed, former gymnastics prodigy who after winning a miracle bronze at the 2004 world gymnastics championships, becomes a celebrity in her small town of Amherst, Ohio. The film is set 11 years after her victory as she still milks her success around her hometown with no shame. But when her former coach dies suddenly, Hope receives a letter saying she’ll inherit $500,000 if she coaches her star student (Hayley Luu Richardson) - who threatens to overshadow her victory - for the world championships. She accepts the offer for the cash and to spite the USA teams’ other entry’s coach Lance Tucker (Sebastian Stan).
Upon release, The Bronze was a box office flop and received generally mixed reviews. Personally, I thought the movie was actually okay. It was really funny and crude in places but was too patchy to fill an entire film. Rauch’s Hope’s badass attitude and one-liners really saved this movie along with the competitiveness between her and Stan’s Tucker. From the outside, this movie looks rather safe but it is wild and raunchy throughout. This definitely isn’t to everyone’s taste but for those who it is, it’s well worth a hour and a half of your time.
Score - 6/10
