Jojo Rabbit is a 2019 comedy-drama war film based on Christine Leunens’ 2008 novel Caging Skies and directed and adapted by Taika Waititi. The main focus in the movie is on Johannes ‘Jojo’ Betzer (Roman Griffin Davis), a ten-year-old who’s a devoted Hitler fanatic and member of the Hitler Youth organisation. He also has an imaginary friend, a satirised version of Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi). He gets the nickname ‘Jojo Rabbit’ after refusing to ring a rabbits neck. After Jojo has an accident with a grenade forces him to leave the group and go home and recover, he discovers his mother (Scarlett Johannson) has been letting a Jewish girl called Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie) hide in the wall of his dead sister's room. This leaves him to question his morals as he befriends Elsa and learns that she is not that different to him. The films supporting cast includes Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, Alfie Allen and Stephen Merchant.

I enjoyed the movie, even though it’s definitely a mixed bag of ideas and emotions. From what on the outside may look like a silly and inaccurate mess about the Nazi’s, is actually a bold tragi-comedy about a boy who struggles to come to terms with the truth about the people he’s against, foreshadowed by the people he’s surrounded by (it’s still silly and satirical.) it also is rather accurate about the history of World War Two and takes an interesting look at the final months of the Third Reich through the eyes of a child.
