The Guilty is a 2021 crime thriller drama based on the 2018 Danish film of the same name. Released on Netflix, it stars Jake Gyllenhaal as former LAPD detective Joe Baylor who was demoted to 911 dispatch operator. On his last day of the job before a court case, he desperately tries from his desk to save a mother and daughter who’ve been abducted, while the emergency services are dealing with major forest fires at the same time. The entire movie is set within a 911 call centre and the only characters actually seen are Joe and two other operators.
This movie was made in 11 days in November 2020. The voice cast includes Riley Keough, Peter Sarsgaard, Eli Goree, Ethan Hawke and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. The film has received mixed reviews since it’s worldwide release on October 1st 2021.
Most critics have said that this film fails to live up to the original and that it needed a lot of work. I’d agree with most points critics have made on this movie. The film lacks a lot compared to the original and a remake was totally unnecessary, but it still holds up making this a suspenseful, gripping story full of twists and turns to keep you on your toes. The only good thing about this remake really is the lead performance from Jake Gyllenhaal. Like most movies he’s in, he brings a fantastic performance which if this movie did not have, would turn it into a bland mess. So basically, it’s worth a watch for Gyllenhaal and the dark, gripping story as well.
