Midnight in Paris is a 2011 fantasy comedy-drama, directed and written by Woody Allen. It stars Owen Wilson as screenwriter Gil, who goes on holiday with his fiancé Inez (Rachel McAdams) and her family to Paris in search of inspiration for a novel he is writing. He wanders the streets of Paris at night and is transported back to the 1920’s where he meets some of his biggest idols and the woman of his dreams, Adrianna (Marion Cotillard).

Others featured in the large ensemble cast include Corey Stoll as Ernest Hemingway, Tom Hiddleston as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Alison Pill as Zelda Fitzgerald, Kathy Bates as Gertrude Stein and Adrien Brody as Salvador Dali. Michael Sheen, Carla Bruni and Léa Seydoux also appear as part of the modern-day cast. The movie was nominated for four Oscars at the 84th Academy Awards and won Best Original Screenplay. It also won Best Screenplay at the Golden Globes and Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media at the 55th Grammy Awards.

This movie has got the perfect formula for, what I’d consider, a perfect film. First, the movie is cinematically beautiful, perfectly encapsulating the gorgeousness of Paris’ streets and landscapes both in day and night. Second, there is a spectacular and highly talented cast which is fuelled by a fantastic script full of wit and insight into Parisian life and the lives of some of the greatest literary and artistic geniuses of the 20th century.

Score - 9/10
