Run time - 133 minutes

Black Widow is a 2021 action superhero movie and is the 24th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film takes place after the events of Captain America: Civil War, when Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johnannson) is on the run after breaking the rules of the UN’s Sokovia Accords. When she is in hiding in Norway, she is attacked by a masked enemy called the Taskmaster, who can copy and predict the attacks of any enemy.

During the movie, Natasha is forced to confront her past as a assassin at the Red Room when she is reunited with the people she once called her family - her sister Yelena (Florence Pugh), her super soldier father Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour), and her mother Melina (Rachel Weitz). Together they plan to take down the organization which morphed and controlled them as killing machines for the KGB.

This film has been waiting to be released for around a year and a half but was held back because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the first movie in the MCU’s phase four and will be followed this year by Shang-Chi and The Legend Of The Ten Rings in September, Eternals in November, and Spider-Man: No Way Home in December.

A solo superhero movie for Black Widow is long overdue, and after the events of Avengers: Endgame, it seemed impossible that it would ever happen. Now, we have been given a movie full to the brim of action, laced with poignancy and the occasional funny remark. It also gave an insight into the character’s backstory, which has only been occasionally remarked upon in previous films. It could’ve been better in places but overall, the movie was good enough to exceed fan’s expectations. I went to see the movie in the cinemas on the day of its release (7th July) and was just pleased to get back into a place like that after such a long time. This movie has seen cinema numbers increase as restrictions are removed and more people are encouraged to get back to normal after the fallout of the pandemic.

Score - 7/10
