 Loki (episodes 1 & 2) - 2021

Loki is a 2021 American fantasy superhero series produced by Marvel Studios and based on the character from the Marvel comics. This is the third Disney+ original series developed by Marvel based on supporting characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe: the first was WandaVision, released in January 2021 (about Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and The Vision (Paul Bettany)), followed by The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, released in March 2021 (about Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).

This new series, whose first episode premiered on June 9th, is about Thor’s adoptive brother Loki, portrayed by Tom Hiddleston. Loki, also known as the ‘God of Mischief’, is a prince of the realm Asgard and has made numerous attempts to take over the earth and universe by stealing a sacred device called the Tesseract and teaming up with alien races for his own means. Over the movies and comics, Loki has had to team up with his brother on several occasions to save the day, even though it’s Thor whose usually trying to stop him. This TV series is set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, where an alternate version of Loki created a new timeline after the Avengers fought Thanos to save reality. In that timeline, Loki managed to steal the Tesseract after being captured at the end of Avengers Assemble (the first movie in the Avengers series). After this happens, Loki is captured by the Time Variance Authority, an organization that keeps the ‘Sacred Timeline’ in order. Instead of being eliminated for his actions, Loki is forced to help Agent Mobius (Owen Wilson) and the TVA find an alternate version of himself called ‘The Variant’, who is meddling with the Sacred Timeline and poses a threat to all of time itself.

So far, I’d say the series has overcome my expectations. I’d say this has already blown Wandavision and the Falcon and the Winter Soldier (both series I loved) right out of the water. They’ve taken this to a new level; it’s funny, intriguing and always keeps you at the edge of your seat. They’ve really delivered with the new series about the MCU’s ultimate anti-hero.

It was also revealed in a teaser for the show that on Loki’s TVA file, he is classed under sex as genderfluid, a very rare occurrence with characters in television and cinema and has never really had proper representation in the media (the subject has been put into more clarification in the comics).

Overall, Marvel Studios seem to be doing a really good job with the direction of their recent productions and have been at a peak with the quality of a lot of them over the past few years. Let’s hope for the sake of MCU fans and moviegoers alike that it stays that way.

Score - 8/10
