Victor Frankenstein is a 2015 horror drama film based on the classic horror novel ‘Frankenstein’ by Mary Shelley. James McAvoy stars as the titular character, a mad scientist living in Victorian London obsessed with creating new life and bringing back the dead after a near-death experience as a child; and Daniel Radcliffe plays his assistant Igor, a hunchbacked circus clown with a shared interest in the human anatomy who Victor rescues and employs after they team up to save the life of the circus’ acrobat Lorelai after a fatal accident. Together, they work together to create and design a new form of life while trying to stay hidden from the police for suspected murder.

The story of Frankenstein and his immoral creation is a classic piece of science fiction literature and has been portrayed on the silver screen many times over the decades; and this portrayal, compared to previous incarnations, lacks a certain pizazz that is key to the story and is rather unoriginal in its approach. There is a nice gothic aesthetic to the film and the special effects are fairly good but can be relied on too much at certain points in the movie, making the writing seem strained. One of the movie’s saving graces is James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe’s lead performances; McAvoy managing to bring a good balance of lunacy and emotion and Radcliffe’s Igor showing an audience perspective into the movie wild world the character had been thrown into. Though I do have mixed feelings about this movie in general, there is enough suspense, action and occasional sparks of humour to keep you interested in the story. Overall, I thought the movie was alright, an opportunity that could’ve been treated differently but definitely not wasted.
