What We Did on Our Holiday is a 2014 comedy-drama by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, creators of the BBC sitcom Outnumbered. The film is about Doug and Abi McLeod (David Tennant and Rosamund Pike), who are going through a divorce, as they go with their three children on one final journey as a family to celebrate Doug’s terminally ill father Gordie’s (Billy Connolly) 75th birthday in the Scottish Highlands. They try to keep there split a secret from Gordie, Doug’s brother Gavin (Ben Miller) and his family, though Doug and Abi’s kids Lottie, Mickey and Jess innocently give away too much information which leads to many unforeseen consequences.

Without giving too much of the plot away, this movie summed up in 4 words would be heartwarming, witty, poignant and hilarious. It does though carry the same format of Hamilton and Jenkin’s aforementioned show Outnumbered also about two struggling parents with 3 kids who overshare and accidentally cause trouble. The content in this movie is also semi-improvisational as the kids usually make up their own lines which really gives both these projects the heart and soul it has. Yes, this film may fall flat in some places but it’s still very entertaining and full of surprises along the way.
