TV review no.6 - Staged (2020)

Staged - 2020

Rating - 15

Directed and Written by - Simon Evans

Starring - David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Simon Evans, Georgia Tennant, Anna Lundberg

Staged is a six-part comedy series set during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant, the series follows fictionalised versions of themselves trying rehearsing for a production of the Luigi Pirandello play Six Characters in Search of an Author over videocall. Though they never succeed due to the constant interruptions of isolated family life. Meanwhile, director of the play Simon Evans (also playing a fictional version of himself) moves back in with his sister, Lucy Eaton and is hassled by the play’s producer (Nina Sosanya)(who is the only fictional character in the show). Throughout the show, there are guest appearances from the two stars partners, Georgia Tennant and Anna Lundberg, and cameos from big-name actors Samuel L Jackson and Judi Dench. This made-in-lockdown show was filmed only using video conferencing technology and mobile devices. The series premiered on BBC1 in June 2020 and has recently been bought in the USA by streaming company Hulu.

Though pretty thin storywise and limited with its production (expected because of the circumstances), this series was a refreshing and enjoyable watch during lockdown, full of hilarious banter during a rough patch for people who work in the creative arts business.

Score - 8/10

Staged is available to stream now on Netflix and BBC iPlayer in the UK and Hulu in the US
