Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is a comedy/sci-fi/drama BBC & Netflix originals series adapted from the series of books by author Douglas Adams. The series follows “holistic” detective Dirk Gently (Barnett), born Svlad Cjelli, for the majority of his life he was kept in the government organisation Blackwing for containing and testing people with “special abilities” because of Dirk’s self-denied psychic powers. He is highly enthusiastic and excitable to cover up his self insecurities. Alongside Dirk, there is Todd Brotzman (Wood), a bellboy who discovers several dead bodies (including businessman Patrick Springs) in a hotel suite and unintentionally becomes a murder suspect, who is then dragged into Dirk’s cases as his “assistant” while trying to take care of his sister Amanda (Marks) who suffers from the fictional disease Parafibulitus, which gives her vivid and painful hallucinations. The two are also joined by security officer Farah Black (Eshete) usually followed by gang the Rowdy 3 (a group of four which Amanda later joins) while they try to solve supernatural mysteries.

Meanwhile, there is “holistic” assassin Bart Curlish (Fiona Dourif), who was also contained in Blackwing. She thinks that the universe leads her to kill certain people and her main mission is to kill Dirk Gently (even though they have never met). She kidnaps and forces electronics expert Ken (Mpho Koaho) to travel with her and be her friend. Though Bart has murderous tendencies and dark life, she is also naive and childlike.

In the first series, the team are in Seattle trying to find Patrick Spring’s missing teen daughter Lydia Springs, who has been kidnapped by a group of soul swapping maniacs when her soul is swapped with a corgi’s. Dirk and Todd kidnap the dog and when debating with the enemy, throw the dog off a bridge. The dog is saved by detectives Estevez and Zimmerfield, who are on the case to solve the murder of Patrick Springs while the others are getting into very weird situations while on the run from Blackwing.

The second series plot is very much different from the first. Dirk has been recaptured by Blackwing and Todd and Farah are on the run from the government. The two are taken in by two sheriffs in the fictional town of Bergsberg, Montana who hide them while they stay off the radar. Suddenly, Dirk is teleported to Bergsberg to the boot of a car which was crashed decades before by fellow inmate Mona Wilder, a “holistic” actress who can shapeshift and tells Dirk to “find the boy”. Dirk reunites with Todd and Farah when suddenly a mysterious pink haired man armed with a large pair of scissors called Panto Trost randomly appears from another dimension, claiming to be from the land of Wendimoor and trying to find a man called “Dirk Gently” who is supposed to show him a boy and save his kingdom. Throughout the series, they try to solve the mystery and find a portal to Wendimoor.

To be honest, i really love this show. When i first got netflix, this was one of the first shows i ever watched and compared to other netflix original shows, this one is actually good. I love the absurd stories and quirkiness of the characters. Even though the plot does differ from the original story in the novels, this series still has the charm and wit of the original. For anyone who has netflix, is a big sci-fi fan and hasn't seen this, i would definitely recommend this show.
