Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is a 2016 comedy mockumentary from The Lonely Island team, originally famed for their SNL digital shorts and comedy songs in the 2000’s and early 2010’s. The movie is told as a musical documentary about rapper Conner Friel AKA “Conner4Real” (Samberg), a musical prodigy who with his childhood best friends Owen Bouchard (Taccone) and Lawrence Dunn (Schaffer) and their manager Harry (Meadows), they start rap pop group The Style Boyz, who are instantly popular because of their hit song The Donkey Roll. But when Lawrence doesn’t receive credit for a guest verse on an award-winning song, he leaves the group.

Conner soon goes solo with Owen as his DJ while Lawrence becomes a farmer. His first solo album, “Thriller also”, is a major success, mainly due to Owen’s mixes for the songs. But for Conner’s second album, he decides to write everything himself leading to 2015 when he releases Connquest, which completely flops and has horrible reviews. Conner then starts his album tour, but when sales are low, they hire rival rapper Hunter The Hungry as an opening act who slowly takes over the show and his career. This leads to many scandals and public humiliations for Conner while Owen is still trying to get The Style Boyz back together.

I’ve seen this movie several times and every time, I still find it as hilarious as the first. It’s got memorable scenes, plenty of laughs and loads of celebrity cameos from the likes of Mariah Carey, Nas, Ringo Starr, Adam Levine, Jimmy Fallon, Snoop Dogg, RZA, and Pharrell Williams. Not many mockumentaries have made it close to the greatness of This Is Spinal Tap, but this probably closer than most attempts because of its over-the-top, absurd style.

Score - 8/10
