Arthur 2: On The Rocks is the 1988 sequel to the 1981 comedy Arthur (which I've also reviewed on this blog). The film, as previously, follows alcoholic, happy-go-lucky billionaire Arthur Bach (Moore), now married to his girlfriend Linda Marolla-Bach, as they are, yet again, pestered by the Johnson family and is told if Arthur doesn't marry Susan Johnson (who he was supposed to marry in the first film) then her father Burt Johnson will cut off his inheritance (which also happened in the first film). This leaves Arthur and Linda homeless, Linda going back to being a waitress and having to rent a dirty flat while at the same time, waiting to adopt a child from an adoption agency as at the start, Linda discovers she is unable to have children.
Though this movie sounds rather promising, the last installment in this series falls flat compared to the very well done former. This movie is rather repetitive with its storyline as it's practically the same as the last film. This film feels more like a repeat with fewer jokes and worse dialogue. Though I do congratulate them for trying to make a sequel as this movie was made several years after the death of the director and writer of the first movie Steve Gordon who died in 1982. His work on the first Arthur was superb, and the script was witty and interesting. Though I do see though this follow-up had a lot of effort and work was thrown into it, it never really worked as good as the first, as is the case with most sequels over the years. Though the acting is not a problem as, yet again, Dudley Moore, Liza Minnelli and John Gielgud (who only guest appears in this movie) were as good as they were in the original.
Overall, it’s still worth watching if you enjoyed the first one but this movie definitely isn't as bad as that bloody Russell Brand remake in 2011 which I’d definitely not recommend only if you want to cringe for 90 minutes.
Score - 5/10
